Girl Power Fall 2024

 What is Girl Power?

Since 2008, the Girl Power series at Kopernik Observatory & Science Center has provided hundreds of young women a chance to learn about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in a warm, non-threatening environment, while making new friends and having fun, too. Each Girl Power program includes a visit with a female scientist or engineer to discuss how she chose her career, how she trained for it, and what she does in her job every day.

Girl Power: HERA

The Ultimate Space Camping Trip!

Grades 3-5 & Grades 6-8
Monday, November 11, 2024
9 am – 3 pm

Join us on Monday, November 11 from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM to find out what it’s like to live for 45 days in the Human Exploration Research Analog. Work together with other girls to explore the fascinating closed habitat on Earth that is used to research ways to keep astronauts mission-ready as space travel expands to the Moon, Mars, and beyond!

Specifically, you will answer the questions: What is an Analog? What is its purpose?  How do the people living and working in HERA help astronauts prepare for traveling to and living on Mars? What would it be like to live on Mars?

Girls will participate in engaging and interactive activities that will simulate the challenges astronauts experience while training for and traveling in space. For example, the girls will have the opportunity to virtually explore the Mars surface through an augmented reality experience.

Girls in grades 3-5 will work in small groups with others at that level, as will the girls in grades 6-8.

As with every Girl Power program, students will have the opportunity to visit with scientific experts. In this case, they will chat with the crew members currently on mission in HERA at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The crew members will discuss their personal experiences, share mission information, and conduct a Q&A session.

We hope you’ll take advantage of this special day to learn new things, make new friends and have fun!
