KoperniKids (ages 3-6)

Join us for the KoperniKids program, a kid-friendly approach to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) exploration designed especially for children 3 to 6 years old. Each session will offer fun, hands-on learning with a different set of activities, experiments, and songs that will encourage your child to participate in the wonderful world of science, technology, engineering, and math.

For the summer & fall of 2022, we will continue to limit the number of students to 12 per session and restrict adult participation to one adult per child.  All participants will be required to wear facemasks while inside Kopernik’s buildings.

 

Where: Kopernik Observatory & Science Center, 698 Underwood Road, Vestal, NY

What to bring: One adult is required to stay with the child during the program

Cost: Kopernik Members: $15; Non-Members: $18 per session per child (parent/grandparent are free)

Pajama Party                                  Saturday, January 14          10:30 a.m. – Noon

What would it be like to sleep all winter long? Come dressed in your pajamas and together we will explore what it means to hibernate. Which animals hibernate and what happens while they are hibernating? 

Inventors and Makers                   Saturday, February 11            10:30 a.m. – Noon

Come Curious! What do you do with an idea? You change the world! We will explore some famous inventors and their inventions that have changed our lives. Then you will have time to create and make your own invention.

Wind Energy                                 Saturday, March 18       10:30 a.m. – Noon

March is known to be windy! What makes the wind blow? Wind is a powerful force of nature and you can make it work for you. We will discover how wind works and how it can be converted into energy with a couple of fun hands-on projects.

Let’s Get Electric                          Saturday, April 22    10:30 a.m. – Noon

What is electricity and how does it work? We will learn about static and current electricity as well as a natural form of electricity – lightning! Come ready to have electrifying, fun times.

Our Feathered Friends                Saturday, May 20    10:30 a.m. – Noon

Spring is here and the birds are singing! Birds are all around us. In the city and in the country. Do you stop to take the time to really notice them? Today we will start a nature study of birds. We will make two types of bird feeders to take home so you can continue your study.

Life at the Pond (back by popular demand) Saturday, June 17  10:30 a.m. – Noon

Ponds are very common in our area. This session will allow you and your child to discover what lives near, around, and in the pond. We will use microscopes to take a closer look at the small microscopic creatures that live in the water in ponds. We will learn about the life cycle of frogs and some interesting facts about fish.
