This year, Kopernik Observatory & Science Center celebrates 50 years of serving our community as an observatory and as a center for science education. In 1972, members of the Broome County Polish-American community rallied the local community to build an observatory in the hills of Vestal, New York to commemorate the birth of Polish astronomer Mikołaj Kopernik (Copernicus). This group set out to create a “living” monument to inspire young and old with an appreciation for astronomy. Since its dedication on June 16, 1974, the Kopernik Observatory continues to be the best-sited public observatory in the northeast and a Broome County gem which has enriched the lives of generations of families.

Kopernik is growing in its outreach and importance as an institution for science education! Kopernik has and will continue to be the place where people of all ages are inspired to “Look Up, Dream Big.”

We invite you to join us for a celebration of Kopernik’s remarkable first 50 years and to envision the next half-century together! Be inspired by Kopernik’s history and its contributions to our region in the areas of science, technology, and engineering. Learn about Kopernik’s plans for the next 50 years and ways you can share in building our legacy for generations to come. Join us in a champagne toast to Kopernik’s future as we “Reach for the Stars” through our shared commitment to education and lifelong learning.
