NGC 5394 and NGC 5395 (aka Arp 84)
An Interacting pair of Galaxies - Supernova 2000cr

Supernova 2000cr:

• Discovered: June 25th, 2000, by Migliardi and Dimai of Col Drusci Observatory.
• Magnitude 17.0 at discovery, and about 16.1 in the Kopernik image.
• Type II, before max brightness

NGC 5394 [the smaller galaxy to the north] has prominent inner and outer spiral arms (the inner arms appear as a nearly complete central circle). The inner spiral arm system smoothly joins the outer system. The companion galaxy NGC 5395 has several dark dust lanes, and knotty spiral arms.

Radio astronomers report that maps of neutral hydrogen show a tail extending to the southwest of NGC 5395. An optical counterpart is faintly visible in the Kopernik image. From radio observations astronomers conclude that NGC 5395 is undergoing a direct encounter with NGC 5394.

This pair is included in Arp’s catalog of unusual galaxies as ARP 84. Using the red shift data from the “NASA Extra-galactic Data Base(NED)”, (and a Hubble Constant of 62 Km per sec., per Megaparsec), one can calculate a rough distance and size for NGC 5395 as: Distance = 184 million light years; Diameter = 155,000 light years.
